I am a big fan of Janson Voorhees compared to the other slashers. I was so excited to see this film because I enjoyed Michael Bay’s remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (TCM). TCM remake brought a lot of the ideas from the original, then modernized it with a dose of realism and became a hit for this generation. This time they went for another slasher flick and attempted to do the same thing with it. I was excited holding on to my ticket, watching and laughing at a theatre staff dressed up as Jason Voorhees standing by the door scaring people as they walked into the dark theatre, and then finding a nice comfortable seat with the same expectation as I did with TCM.
Here is the premise of the film for those of you who hadn’t seen the originals. A deformed/mentally challenged young boy named Jason Voorhees drowned in Camp Crystal Lake because the camp counselors weren’t paying attention while he was swimming. So his mother started a bloody massacre on Friday the 13th because that was Jason’s birthday, hence the movie title. All but one of the counselors survives from that incident. The movie now moves onto the present day and it’s been years since the killings happened at Camp Crystal Lake. The campsite has since been abandoned and shut down because of the incident. Now, these teenagers show up to the camp ground so expect plenty of nudity, sex, and drugs going on. Then Jason shows up and starts cutting his way into the film. Oh yeah, there is a simple side story to this one to keep the movie rolling. A traveller, played by Supernaturals’ Jared Padalecki comes into town looking for his missing sister and gets caught in between Jason and his victims.
The film brings back plenty of memories of the old school slasher flicks for those of you that seen the original. The movie is pretty much the combination of part 1~3 all blended all together. The director and writers said they wanted to grab what they liked from all of the death scenes from those movies and make it into one new movie. I can respect it as a film made as a tribute to the originals, that’s probably why they did it. For those of you who had not see the original will probably walk into this one and think this is just another lame slasher flick. After watching the film I did enjoy it, but I also felt like something was missing. Mind you since this is a remake or I should say a reboot of the film, it will not have Jason doing the odd and unrealistic stuff like having his super human strength to punch through people or being able to with stand bullets/feel pain. I like the fact that they made him smarter like how a serial killer is meant to be more real and plans his every move for his next victim. Think of it as Solid Snake with a machete. Overall, the film is entertaining and nothing special to go back on. So if you are expecting something more you might as well wait for the video, but if you just want to enjoy and relive the 80s slasher style film go and check it out while it’s in theatre.
