PS3 Game Review: Sing Star

OVERALL:  6.5/10
Game Play:  6/10
Graphics quality:  N/A
Addiction value:  5/10
Funness:  7/10

I really love playing video games of all sorts.  Anything from the RPG to sports to… well… music singing games.  Most recently I had purchased “Sing Star” for my Playstation 3.  I have to admit, I was quite disappointed.  The songs itself were far and few between, the game on easy was pretty hard and was too sensitive to voice alterations when changing from note to note and the sound quality was just not up to par.  Worst of it was the two mics that game with the game were poor quality.

The good thing about the game was that there are very much a large variety of songs to PURCHASE off their website and that it comes with the actual music videos you’d see on television.  As well, the game allows for duet mode which really isn’t a duet but more like shared lines of a song.  Sadly, the game is more of a glorified karaoke box than an actual full fledged game.  It doesn’t allow you to remove the lyrics, background voice nor pitch lines if you so desired to just sing on your own to see what points you’d get.  Outside of that, unless you’re willing to spend a buck a song, you’re better off getting a game like “American Idol”.

I actually found “American Idol” easier to play, more fun overall and a much better variety of songs to chose from.  As well, the voice registered easily with little need to yell into the mic for perfect pitch.  I found that Rock Band was very similiar in the singing portion as well.  American idol also allowed you to remove the track itself, the voice so you can hear yourself sing alone and practice modes with different levels.  American Idol doesn’t allow for duet performances but does have a better mic and better game quality overall.  Even the Paula, Randy and Simon banter wasn’t too bad.

My recommendation is to get Konami’s American Idol rather than Sing Star.  It’s an overall more fun party game and better playability.
